Advent Sunday 2026, the first day of the Western Christian season of Advent, falls on Sunday, 29 November 2026. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, the Sunday nearest St Andrew’s Day (30 November), so it always lands between 27 November and 3 December. With Christmas 2026 on a Friday, the 2026 season lasts 26 days.
Key takeaways
- Advent Sunday 2026 is 29 November, as listed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Liturgy Office of England and Wales.
- The rule: the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, which is the Sunday nearest 30 November.
- Advent opens the Western church year; 29 November 2026 also starts Year B of the Catholic Sunday readings.
- The Advent wreath began with Johann Hinrich Wichern’s candle wheel in Hamburg in 1839; printed Advent calendars followed in early 1900s Germany.
- Eastern Orthodox Christians keep the 40-day Nativity Fast instead, from 15 November on the revised calendar.
When does Advent start in 2026?
Advent starts on Sunday, 29 November 2026, and runs until Christmas Eve, Thursday, 24 December. The four Sundays of Advent 2026 are 29 November, 6 December, 13 December and 20 December.
Two official church calendars agree. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) lists the First Sunday of Advent as 29 November 2026, and the Liturgy Office of England and Wales lists 29 November 2026 as the 1st Sunday of Advent. The arithmetic checks out: Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, the Sunday before it is 20 December, and three Sundays earlier is 29 November.
| Year | Christmas Day | Advent Sunday | Days of Advent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Thursday | 30 November | 25 |
| 2026 | Friday | 29 November | 26 |
| 2027 | Saturday | 28 November | 27 |
| 2028 | Monday | 3 December | 22 |

How is the date of Advent calculated?
Advent Sunday is the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, which always makes it the Sunday nearest St Andrew’s Day, 30 November (Catholic Encyclopedia, 1907). Because Christmas can fall on any weekday, Advent Sunday moves within a seven-day window:
- Earliest, 27 November, when Christmas is a Sunday: four full weeks, 28 days through Christmas Eve.
- Latest, 3 December, when Christmas is a Monday: the fourth Sunday of Advent is also Christmas Eve, and the season shrinks to 22 days.
A shortcut: Advent Sunday is three days after the last Thursday of November. In 2026 that Thursday is 26 November, US Thanksgiving, so Advent Sunday is the Sunday after Thanksgiving. For how the Western calendar itself was reset, see why ten days vanished in 1582.
Why does the Western church year begin with Advent?
In Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and many other Western churches, Advent is the first season of the liturgical year, the annual cycle of feasts and readings, so a church’s new year arrives about a month before 1 January. The USCCB calendar moves the Catholic Sunday readings to Year B on 29 November 2026, a cycle that runs to 21 November 2027.
The name comes from the Latin adventus, arrival. National Geographic reports that historians trace the first formal Advent observances to northern Italy, as Christmas traditions took shape in the fifth century, and that by the sixth century Christians in France kept a five-week fast called St. Martin’s Lent.
How long is Advent?
Advent lasts from 22 to 28 days and always includes four Sundays. The length depends only on the weekday of Christmas: in 2026 it runs 26 days.
Where do the Advent wreath and Advent calendar come from?
Both began among German Protestants.
The wreath. Sonntagsblatt, a German Protestant weekly, reports that on the first Sunday of Advent in 1839 a wreath hung in the prayer hall of the Rauhes Haus in Hamburg-Horn, a home for neglected children founded by the theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern. It was a candle holder about the size of a wagon wheel, with four large white candles for the Sundays and small red ones for the weekdays, so the count changed with the date of Christmas. Fir greenery was added in 1860, and smaller four-candle wreaths became the familiar form. National Geographic gives 1838 instead; the German sources give 1839.
The calendar. Before printed calendars, Sonntagsblatt notes, families in northern and western Germany counted down with lines on doors or walls that children wiped away one a day, or a straw a day laid in a crib. It names a 1902 Weihnachtsuhr für Kinder (Christmas clock for children) from a Hamburg bookshop as the first printed Advent calendar, and credits Gerhard Lang, a pastor’s son, with shaping the genre from 1903, inspired by his mother’s homemade calendar. National Geographic gives 1908 for Lang’s first printed calendar and says a 1953 photo of President Dwight D. Eisenhower opening one with his grandchildren helped popularize them in the US. The sources differ by a few years but agree on early 1900s Germany.
How is the Orthodox Nativity Fast different from Advent?
Eastern Orthodox Christians prepare for Christmas with the Nativity Fast, a fixed 40-day season from 15 November to 24 December, which in 2026 starts two weeks before Western Advent. St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church describes it as one of the four canonical fasting seasons, a joyous fast less strict than other fasting periods. It is also called Philip’s Fast, since it begins the day after the feast of the Apostle Philip.
Churches on the older Julian calendar, such as the Russian Orthodox Church, keep Christmas on 7 January and begin the fast on 28 November.
Why is Advent a season of light in the dark?
In the Northern Hemisphere, Advent spans the darkest weeks of the year: one more candle is lit each Sunday as the days shorten toward the December solstice. In 2026 the solstice falls on 21 December at 12:49 PM Pacific Standard Time in Encinitas, California (20:49 UTC; the US Naval Observatory lists 20:50), the day after the fourth Sunday of Advent.
National Geographic describes Advent as a season of light at winter’s darkest point. That symbolism is religious and cultural, not a health claim (grade: cultural). How the body responds to dark evenings is a separate question:
| What the season suggests | What the evidence shows | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Keep evenings dim and warm | In a retrospective analysis of 116 healthy adults aged 18 to 30 living in a research unit, room light (under 200 lux) before bedtime delayed melatonin onset in 99% of them and shortened melatonin duration by about 90 minutes compared with dim light (J Clin Endocrinol Metab, 2011). Candles were not tested | plausible |
| Winter nights invite earlier sleep | After five adults spent a week camping under the natural winter light-dark cycle, their biological night and sleep began earlier than under electric lighting at home (Current Biology, 2017) | plausible |
| Keep regular hours all season | The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute advises the same bedtime and wake time every day, varying by no more than about an hour on weekends | converges |
