Describe your art journey!
I was born in Ohio and grew up in a small rural town. Playing in the woods gave me a sense of freedom and a connection to nature that influenced my creativity immensely. As a teenager we moved to the city, Columbus, and I started skateboarding which dramatically influenced my sense of individual style and creativity. After college I moved to Portland, Oregon which at the time (circa 2005) was liberating and inspiring. I met a group of artists and really devoted myself to making paintings full time. I moved to San Francisco for a few years where I was able to establish my work and learn to support myself exclusively with my art. I also spent a couple years in NYC and I even took a crack at Paris for a time before landing in California. All these places informed my art making and world view in unique ways.
How do your daily habits affect your creative expression?
Creating the habit of studio time helps get work done. Even if its small amounts each day.
How has art impacted the way you structure your day?
I structure my day around my art practice and the demands of the work that flows my way.
What role does art play in your personal wellness?
Outside of the physical impact on my body, which at times can be very demanding for large scale works and quite tedious hunched over smaller detailed works… Art has become a mental therapy for me as well. I enjoy the act of painting and find it to be a release.
What are your favorite creative media and/or subjects?
I enjoy painting many different things. I do not create a box around the subject matter that I try to explore. This is perhaps why I have chosen a more abstracted set of visual language in my work.
Who or what has been the biggest influence(s) to you as an artist?
Earlier in my life I looked to other artists as influences. The older I get I find that I have shifted to rely on my own intuition to influence my art and that intuition is really just a synthesis of all the things going on around me at any given moment.
