Simone trains for approximately 32 hours a week. Above is her set schedule for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Monday and Wednesday she’ll train for five hours straight, and Saturdays from 9AM-1PM. She takes Sundays off to spend time with the family and usually goes to church.
She trains ten minutes from her parents’ house in Spring, Texas. Her mother, Nellie, owns the gym where she trains, the World Champions Centre, and built it nearby to make it easier for Simone to go to and fro.
Simone shared some details about her workout with Women’s Health:
We have a routine that includes running and then a stretch for every part of our body. So we’ll stretch before practice, but especially afterwards, because then you’re tense and you need to stretch those muscles down. It’s very important to keep your body flexible so that you don’t get injured.
Her favorite exercises are legs, “… because those exercises come pretty easily to me. I have good, powerful legs, so I can do conditioning and they won’t be too sore.” On the flip side, she abhors stomach conditioning and says she prefers to laugh for better abs.
Fun over Matter
While incredibly disciplined about her training and focused on the mat, Simone’s secret to success might just be her positive attitude. She credits a sports psychologist for preventing her from going “downhill” in 2013 after the Secret U.S. Classic, when she withdrew from competition after multiple falls and near-injuries. As NBC reports, since that contest Simone, “… has won every single all-around competition she’s entered… that’s 12 titles in a row with all-around scores over 62 points when only a handful of gymnasts are able to break 60.”
Simone’s mother Nellie may know best, as she’s watched her train and compete over the years:
She’s very driven, she’s very focused, but she likes to have fun. If she goes in and she’s looking serious [laughs] it’s not gonna be a good meet. But if my daughter is acting silly, she’s giggling… she’s gonna have a good meet.
